Latvia

Political journey

Independent in 1918, annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940 and independent again in 1991 after the Singing Revolution. Latvia joined NATO and the European Union in 2004 and the euro in 2014. It has a large Russian-speaking minority, which shapes its wary stance toward Moscow.
