Lesotho

Political journey

A mountain kingdom entirely surrounded by South Africa, Lesotho became independent from Britain in 1966 and has seen coups, a 1998 South African military intervention and repeated political crises. The monarchy is ceremonial. The businessman Sam Matekane became prime minister in 2022, and the economy depends heavily on South Africa and on textile exports.
