Liberia

Political journey

Founded in the 19th century by freed African Americans, Liberia declared independence in 1847, and its settler elite ruled until a 1980 coup. Two civil wars from 1989 to 2003 killed roughly 250,000 people. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf became Africa’s first elected woman head of state in 2006, and Joseph Boakai won the presidency in 2023.

Joseph Boakai sits in the right-authoritarian part of the Caucus economy and liberty compass: leaning free market and slightly authoritarian. The profile is close to the middle on war and peace and interventionism.
