Libya

Political journey

A former Italian colony that became a kingdom in 1951, Libya was ruled from 1969 by Muammar Gaddafi until a 2011 uprising and NATO intervention overthrew him. It has been split since between rival governments and militias in the west and east, with a UN-backed Government of National Unity in Tripoli led by Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh and Khalifa Haftar’s forces controlling the east.
