Liechtenstein

Political journey

A small Alpine principality sovereign since 1806, whose princes lived in Vienna until they moved to Vaduz in 1938. It is closely tied to Switzerland by a customs union and currency, and its prince keeps unusually strong powers, including a veto over legislation, which voters confirmed in a 2003 referendum.
