Lithuania

Political journey

A great medieval state that later united with Poland, Lithuania was absorbed by Russia in the 18th century, independent in 1918 and annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940. In 1990 it was the first Soviet republic to declare independence. It joined NATO and the EU in 2004 and is now one of Russia’s most outspoken critics.
