Malawi

Political journey

Independent from Britain in 1964, Malawi was ruled by Hastings Banda as a one-party state until 1994. Multiparty democracy has produced peaceful but sometimes contested changes of power, including a 2020 court annulment of a presidential election. Peter Mutharika, president from 2014 to 2020, returned to office in 2025.

Peter Mutharika sits in the right-authoritarian part of the Caucus economy and liberty compass: slightly free market and leaning authoritarian. The clearest positions are strongly traditional on culture, leaning religious on religion and leaning institutional on institutions. The profile is close to the middle on environment, technology and war and peace.
