Maldives

Political journey

A Muslim sultanate that became a British protectorate and independent in 1965, the Maldives was ruled autocratically by Maumoon Abdul Gayoom for 30 years until multiparty elections in 2008. Politics since has been volatile, swinging between India-leaning and China-leaning governments. It is one of the world’s lowest-lying countries and highly vulnerable to rising seas.

President of the Maldives, 2023 to present

An engineer and former mayor of Malé who won on an “India Out” platform, then tilted the Maldives toward China and Turkey while tightening control over media and courts.

Mohamed Muizzu sits in the left-authoritarian part of the Caucus economy and liberty compass: slightly state-led and leaning authoritarian. The clearest positions are strongly religious on religion, strongly traditional on culture and strongly nationalist on nation. The profile is close to the middle on environment.
