Mali

Political journey

The heart of the medieval Mali Empire, Mali became independent from France in 1960 and moved to democracy in 1992. A 2012 Tuareg rebellion and jihadist takeover of the north led to French intervention. Colonel Assimi Goïta took power in coups in 2020 and 2021, expelled French forces in favor of Russian contractors and dissolved political parties.
