Mauritius

Political journey

A former Dutch, French and then British colony, Mauritius became independent in 1968 and has been a stable multiparty democracy with peaceful changes of government. It developed from sugar into textiles, tourism and finance. After a long dispute with Britain over the Chagos Islands, a 2025 treaty provides for transferring sovereignty to Mauritius.
