Political journey

Historically part of Romanian-speaking Bessarabia, Moldova was incorporated into the Soviet Union in 1940 and became independent in 1991. It has been split since a brief war in 1992 with the breakaway region of Transnistria. After years of oligarch-dominated politics, President Maia Sandu steered it toward the European Union, and it applied for membership in 2022.
