Montenegro

Political journey

An independent principality and kingdom before joining Yugoslavia in 1918, Montenegro stayed in a union with Serbia until a 2006 referendum restored its independence by a narrow margin. It joined NATO in 2017 and is a front-runner for EU membership. Milo Đukanović’s party dominated its politics for three decades until it lost the 2020 election.
