Morocco

Political journey

An independent monarchy for most of its history, Morocco was under French and Spanish protectorates from 1912 to 1956. King Hassan II ruled autocratically for 38 years, and his son Mohammed VI, on the throne since 1999, allowed limited reforms after the 2011 protests while keeping ultimate power. It claims the disputed Western Sahara and normalized relations with Israel in 2020.
