Political journey

Independent from Portugal in 1975 under the Marxist Frelimo, Mozambique fell into a civil war with the Renamo movement until the 1992 peace deal. Frelimo has won every election since, though results have been disputed. A jihadist insurgency in the gas-rich north since 2017 and post-election unrest in 2024 have challenged President Daniel Chapo.
