Myanmar

Political journey

Independent from Britain in 1948, Myanmar, also known as Burma, has been ruled by the military for most of its history since a 1962 coup, apart from a limited opening from 2011 to 2021. A coup in February 2021 toppled the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi and set off a nationwide armed resistance. General Min Aung Hlaing became a nominally civilian president in 2026.

Who leads Myanmar today

Portrait of Min Aung Hlaing

Min Aung Hlaing

President of Myanmar, 2026 to present (military ruler since the 2021 coup)

The army chief who seized power in a 2021 coup and waged a brutal war on resistance forces, he became nominally civilian president in 2026 after an election criticized as a sham.

Min Aung Hlaing sits in the left-authoritarian part of the Caucus economy and liberty compass: leaning state-led and strongly authoritarian. The clearest positions are strongly authoritarian on liberty and authority, strongly strength-first on war and peace and strongly nationalist on nation. The profile is close to the middle on interventionism.
