Nepal

Political journey

A Himalayan kingdom that was never colonized, Nepal fought a decade-long Maoist insurgency from 1996, abolished the monarchy in 2008 and adopted a federal republican constitution in 2015. Coalition politics has been unstable, and the Gen Z protests of 2025 brought down the government. Balen Shah, a former Kathmandu mayor, became prime minister after the 2026 election.

Balen Shah

Prime Minister of Nepal, 2026 to present

A rapper and structural engineer who became Kathmandu’s first independent mayor and, after the 2025 Gen Z protests, led the Rastriya Swatantra Party to a landslide win in 2026.

Balen Shah sits in the right-authoritarian part of the Caucus economy and liberty compass: slightly free market and slightly authoritarian. The clearest positions are strongly anti-establishment on institutions, strongly nationalist on nation and leaning tech-optimist on technology.
