Netherlands

Political journey

Independent from Spain after the Eighty Years’ War, the Dutch Republic became a global trading power and then a kingdom in 1815. The country stayed neutral until Germany occupied it in 1940, built a welfare state after the war and helped found the European Union. Its politics runs on consensus and coalition governments among many parties.
