North Korea

Political journey

Founded in 1948 in the Soviet zone of divided Korea, North Korea fought the 1950 to 1953 Korean War and has been ruled by three generations of the Kim family: Kim Il Sung, Kim Jong Il and, since 2011, Kim Jong Un. It is a one-party state with a personality cult, a state ideology of Juche self-reliance, nuclear weapons and one of the world’s most closed societies.

Supreme Leader of North Korea, 2011 to present

A UN inquiry found crimes against humanity by his state

Rules a hereditary one-party state that is tightly closed to the outside world and has built up a nuclear weapons program.

Kim Jong Un sits in the left-authoritarian part of the Caucus economy and liberty compass: strongly state-led and strongly authoritarian. The clearest positions are strongly state-led on economy, strongly authoritarian on liberty and authority and strongly strength-first on war and peace.
