North Macedonia

Political journey

Part of Yugoslavia until it declared independence peacefully in 1991. A dispute with Greece over its name delayed NATO entry until it became North Macedonia in 2018, and it joined NATO in 2020. Its EU accession talks have since been slowed by objections from Bulgaria.
