Ruled by Denmark and then Sweden, Norway became independent in 1905, was occupied by Germany from 1940 to 1945, and grew rich after oil was found in the North Sea in the 1960s. It rejected EU membership in two referendums and is a NATO founder. Its sovereign wealth fund is among the largest in the world.
