Pakistan

Political journey

Created in 1947 as a homeland for South Asian Muslims, Pakistan lost its eastern wing, now Bangladesh, in 1971 and has alternated between elected governments and military rule. It is a nuclear power with a long rivalry with India, a constant role for the army in politics and recurring economic crises. Shehbaz Sharif has been prime minister since 2024.
