Paraguay

Political journey

Independent since 1811, Paraguay lost about half its population in the devastating War of the Triple Alliance from 1864 to 1870 and was ruled by General Alfredo Stroessner from 1954 to 1989. Democracy since has been dominated by the Colorado Party, which holds power today under Santiago Peña.
