Peru

Political journey

Home of the Inca empire and independent from Spain in 1821, Peru has swung between military governments and elected ones. The Shining Path insurgency and Alberto Fujimori’s authoritarian rule in the 1990s left deep scars, followed by presidents repeatedly facing corruption charges. In 2026 his daughter Keiko Fujimori won the presidency.
