Poland

Political journey

A major European power until it was partitioned in the late 18th century, Poland regained independence in 1918, was invaded by Germany and the USSR in 1939 and fell under communist rule after 1945. The Solidarity movement led to the 1989 round-table talks that began the fall of communism across Europe. Poland joined NATO in 1999 and the EU in 2004.
