A maritime empire from the 15th century, Portugal became a republic in 1910 and lived under the Estado Novo dictatorship of Salazar and Caetano until the 1974 Carnation Revolution. Decolonization of Angola and Mozambique followed, and Portugal joined the European Community in 1986.
