Qatar

Political journey

A British protectorate until 1971, Qatar has been ruled by the Al Thani family since the 19th century. Enormous gas wealth financed rapid modernization, the Al Jazeera network and an activist foreign policy, including mediation with the Taliban and Hamas. It weathered a 2017 to 2021 blockade by its Gulf neighbors and hosted the 2022 World Cup.
