Republic of the Congo

Political journey

Independent from France in 1960, Congo-Brazzaville turned Marxist-Leninist in 1969 and moved to multiparty politics in 1991. Denis Sassou Nguesso, who first took power in 1979, returned by force in a 1997 civil war and has ruled since, winning repeated elections that critics call flawed. Oil dominates its economy.
