Romania

Political journey

United from the Danubian principalities in the 19th century, Romania gained independence in 1878 and became a communist state after 1945, ruled from 1965 by Nicolae Ceaușescu. He was overthrown and executed in the 1989 revolution. After a difficult transition Romania joined NATO in 2004 and the European Union in 2007.
