Senegal

Political journey

Independent from France in 1960 under the poet-president Léopold Senghor, Senegal has never had a successful coup and is one of Africa’s most stable democracies. A crisis over term limits in 2024 was resolved when the young reformist Bassirou Diomaye Faye, freed from jail days before, won the presidency.
