Serbia

Political journey

A medieval kingdom conquered by the Ottomans and revived in the 19th century, Serbia was the core of Yugoslavia. It led the wars of the 1990s under Slobodan Milošević, who fell in 2000, and rejects the independence Kosovo declared in 2008. Aleksandar Vučić dominated politics for over a decade, first as prime minister and then as president, while Serbia remained a candidate for EU membership.
