Sierra Leone

Political journey

Founded as a home for freed slaves in 1787 and independent from Britain in 1961, Sierra Leone endured a brutal civil war from 1991 to 2002, marked by child soldiers and diamond-fueled atrocities. It has held peaceful elections since. President Julius Maada Bio has focused on free schooling and in 2024 banned child marriage.
