Singapore

Political journey

A British trading post, Singapore joined Malaysia in 1963 and was expelled in 1965. Under Lee Kuan Yew and the People’s Action Party, which has governed ever since, it built one of the world’s richest economies, with strict social control, clean government and limited political competition. Lawrence Wong became prime minister in 2024, the fourth in its history.

Portrait of Lawrence Wong

Lawrence Wong

Prime Minister of Singapore, 2024 to present

Succeeded Lee Hsien Loong as prime minister and led the People’s Action Party to another large majority in 2025, after serving as finance minister and co-chairing Singapore’s COVID-19 task force.

Lawrence Wong sits in the right-authoritarian part of the Caucus economy and liberty compass: slightly free market and leaning authoritarian. The clearest positions are strongly institutional on institutions, strongly tech-optimist on technology and leaning authoritarian on liberty and authority. The profile is close to the middle on interventionism.
