Slovakia

Political journey

Part of Czechoslovakia from 1918, apart from a wartime state allied with Nazi Germany, Slovakia became independent in the 1993 Velvet Divorce. It joined NATO and the EU in 2004 and the euro in 2009. Its recent politics has been shaped by Robert Fico’s repeated returns to power and clashes over corruption and the war in Ukraine.
