Solomon Islands

Political journey

A British protectorate until independence in 1978, the Solomon Islands was the scene of fierce battles at Guadalcanal in the Second World War. Ethnic conflict from 1998 to 2003 required an Australian-led intervention. It switched recognition from Taiwan to China in 2019, and a 2022 security pact with China alarmed Australia and the United States.
