Somalia

Political journey

Independent in 1960, Somalia was led by Siad Barre’s dictatorship until his fall in 1991, after which the state collapsed into clan warfare and famine. The Islamist al-Shabaab insurgency has fought successive governments, and African Union forces have supported a fragile federal state. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud returned as president in 2022, while the breakaway region of Somaliland runs its own affairs.
