Sri Lanka

Political journey

Independent from Britain in 1948, Sri Lanka fought a 26-year civil war between the government and Tamil Tiger separatists that ended in 2009. Its politics was dominated by a few families until an economic collapse in 2022 forced out President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. In 2024 the left-wing Anura Kumara Dissanayake won the presidency.
