Sudan

Political journey

Independent from Britain and Egypt in 1956, Sudan has spent most of its history at war or under military rule, including the long war that led South Sudan to secede in 2011. Omar al-Bashir ruled from 1989 until a 2019 uprising, and a 2021 military coup ended the transition. Since April 2023 the army under Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has fought the Rapid Support Forces in a devastating civil war.
