Sweden

Political journey

A great power in the 17th century, Sweden has avoided war since 1814 and stayed neutral in both world wars. The Social Democrats built its welfare state from the 1930s and governed for most of the 20th century. Sweden joined the EU in 1995 and, after Russia invaded Ukraine, abandoned military non-alignment to join NATO in 2024.
