Switzerland

Political journey

Formed by the alliance of a few Alpine cantons in 1291 and reshaped into a federal state by the 1848 constitution after a short civil war. Officially neutral since 1815, Switzerland stayed out of both world wars and the EU, joined the UN only in 2002, and is governed by a seven-member Federal Council and frequent referendums.

Portrait of Guy Parmelin

Guy Parmelin

President of the Swiss Confederation, 2026 (Federal Council member since 2016)

A farmer and winemaker from the Swiss People's Party who holds the rotating Swiss presidency in 2026, as he did in 2021.

Guy Parmelin sits in the right-authoritarian part of the Caucus economy and liberty compass: leaning free market and leaning authoritarian. The clearest positions are strongly traditional on culture, strongly nationalist on nation and strongly non-interventionist on interventionism.
