Taiwan

Political journey

Governed separately from mainland China since 1949, when the Republic of China government retreated there after losing the civil war. Martial law ended in 1987 and Taiwan became a full multiparty democracy in the 1990s, with its first direct presidential election in 1996. Beijing claims the island and threatens to take it by force, while Taiwan governs itself as a sovereign democracy with an unofficial international status.
