Tajikistan

Political journey

A Central Asian country that became independent from the Soviet Union in 1991, Tajikistan endured a civil war from 1992 to 1997 that killed tens of thousands. Emomali Rahmon has ruled since 1994, banned opposition parties and restricted religion, and is grooming his son as successor. It is the poorest of the former Soviet republics and depends on remittances.
