Tanzania

Political journey

Formed by the 1964 union of mainland Tanganyika and Zanzibar, Tanzania followed Julius Nyerere’s African socialism and was a one-party state until 1992. The Chama Cha Mapinduzi party has governed since independence. Samia Suluhu Hassan became its first woman president in 2021, and her 2025 election win, with about 98% of the vote, was followed by a deadly crackdown on protests.

Samia Suluhu Hassan

President of Tanzania, 2021 to present

Tanzania’s first woman president took over after John Magufuli’s death in 2021, at first easing restrictions on the press and opposition, and later faced criticism over the deadly unrest around the 2025 election.

Samia Suluhu Hassan sits in the right-authoritarian part of the Caucus economy and liberty compass: slightly free market and strongly authoritarian. The clearest positions are strongly authoritarian on liberty and authority, strongly traditional on culture and leaning nationalist on nation. The profile is close to the middle on environment.
