Timor-Leste

Political journey

A Portuguese colony until 1975, East Timor was invaded and occupied by Indonesia, at the cost of about 100,000 to 200,000 lives. A 1999 UN referendum voted for independence, followed by militia violence, and it became independent in 2002. The former resistance leaders Xanana Gusmão and José Ramos-Horta still dominate politics, and it joined ASEAN in 2025.
