Political journey

The only Pacific island kingdom never colonized, Tonga was unified in 1845 and was a British protected state from 1900 to 1970. Its monarch and nobles held great power until reforms after the 2006 riots led to a mostly elected parliament in 2010, though the king keeps important authority. Tonga was devastated by the 2022 Hunga Tonga volcanic eruption and tsunami.
