Trinidad and Tobago

Political journey

Independent from Britain in 1962 and a republic since 1976, the twin-island state built its wealth on oil and gas. Politics is split largely along ethnic lines between Afro-Trinidadian and Indo-Trinidadian parties, and the country has struggled with violent crime. Kamla Persad-Bissessar returned as prime minister in 2025.
