Tunisia

Political journey

Independent from France in 1956, Tunisia was ruled by Habib Bourguiba and then Zine El Abidine Ben Ali until the 2011 revolution that set off the Arab Spring. It was long seen as the region’s success story, with a democratic constitution in 2014. In 2021 President Kais Saied suspended parliament, and he has since ruled largely by decree and prosecuted opponents.

Kais Saied sits in the left-authoritarian part of the Caucus economy and liberty compass: slightly state-led and strongly authoritarian. The clearest positions are strongly authoritarian on liberty and authority, strongly traditional on culture and strongly anti-establishment on institutions. The profile is close to the middle on environment.
