United Kingdom

Political journey

The union of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland grew out of a constitutional monarchy that gradually shifted power to parliament from the 17th century. After building and then dismantling the world’s largest empire, it created a welfare state after 1945, joined the European Community in 1973 and left the European Union in 2020 after the 2016 Brexit referendum.
