Uruguay

Political journey

Founded as a buffer state between Argentina and Brazil in the 1820s, Uruguay became a pioneering welfare state in the early 20th century and lived under military rule from 1973 to 1985. It is now one of Latin America’s most stable democracies, having legalized cannabis and same-sex marriage. Yamandú Orsi of the left-wing Frente Amplio took office in 2025.
