Vanuatu

Political journey

Jointly ruled by Britain and France as the New Hebrides, Vanuatu gained independence in 1980 after a brief secessionist crisis. Its politics is famously unstable, with frequent changes of government, but it is prominent in climate diplomacy and led the push for the International Court of Justice’s opinion on states’ climate obligations.
