Venezuela

Political journey

A leading oil exporter, Venezuela was ruled by military strongmen until the 1958 democratic pact, then by two dominant parties. Hugo Chávez’s 1998 election launched a socialist Bolivarian revolution, which Nicolás Maduro continued through economic collapse and mass emigration until the United States captured him in January 2026, leaving Delcy Rodríguez as acting president.
